NPA weighing options to appeal Omotoso ruling
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The National Prosecuting Authority says it is weighing options on whether to appeal the high court ruling which acquitted rape-accused Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso.
He was acquitted on 32 charges, including rape and human trafficking earlier this month.
The high court in Gqeberha freed Omotoso and his co-accused after spending nearly eight years behind bars.
NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said a team of experienced sexual offences prosecutors along with a Senior Counsel have been appointed to assess and advise on the prospects of appealing the judgment.
"This decision is informed by the importance and the complexity of the matter, and the fact that the state can only appeal an acquittal judgment,"
"This team is studying the transcript, and the three other relevant decisions that were handed down in the course of this trial and will provide a memorandum of advice and opinion on the appealability of the judgment."
Earlier this month, the CRL Rights Commission blamed the prosecutors for the acquittal.
