NSFAS student who received R14m handed 5 year sentence

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student Sibongile Mani, who was convicted for the theft of money accidentally paid into her account by the National Student Financial Aid Services (NSFAS), has been sentenced to five years in prison.
In 2017, the fund mistakenly paid a whopping R14 million into Mani's account.
Mani spent R800 000 over the course of two months before the error was picked up.
Handing down the sentence in the East London Regional Court, magistrate Twanette Olivier told the court that a suspended sentence would be inappropriate.

"The only form of sentence the court deems appropriate is that of direct imprisonment. And you are therefore sentenced to a term of five year imprisonment."
Mani, an accounting student and a mother of two, was convicted of theft in February.
