Ntirhisano programme looks at housing in Eldorado Park
Updated | By Samkele Maseko
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has highlighted the housing crisis in Eldorado Park as one of the many issues needing his government's urgent attention.
Makhura visited the area Wednesday afternoon as part of his Ntirhisano Community Outreach programme.
Eldorado Park has long been known as a community plagued by many social ills such as unemployment, poverty and inequality, and drug abuse.
Makhura struck an upbeat tone during his visit, telling residents that his government was on track to resolve their problems.
"We are doing a big housing project, a mega project, in Kliptown that's going to take care of the housing problem in this area. That's a programme that was announced last year. The City of Johannesburg and the provincial government are doing that big housing development to cover the informal settlements as well as the people who have been waiting for houses," Makhura said.
Makhura said they have changed their approach and will no longer be building houses that were away from economic activity as that created more poverty, inequality and unemployment.
