NUM embarks on a strike at LafargeHolcim

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has announced that it will embark on a strike on Thursday involving all its members working on operations of the LafargeHolcim in South Africa.

“The strike will commence with a night shift on Thursday, 11 February 2016. The strike will continue indefinitely until our demands are met,” the NUM said in a terse statement.


“The industrial strike would encompass the entire workforce and it will be a total withdrawal of labour by our members working at LafargeHolcim.”


As many as 2000 workers are expected to down tools to press to better pay.


The NUM, which said the industrial action was protected, is demanding:

1. Salary increase of 13%

2. Standard pay rate for workers doing the same job

3. Acting allowance demand is 35% of the basic salary

4. Housing grant to be concluded with wage negotiations.


Management at LafargeHolcim, which has a cement plant and two grinding facilities in South Africa, were not immediately available for comment.
