NUM to protest working conditions at Blyvoor mine
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will march to Blyvoor Gold Mine in Carletonville on Friday morning.
The march is being organised by former mineworkers and members of the local community.
NUM regional chairperson Zimisele Ponti says workers are unhappy with the working conditions at the mine.
“We believe there is a total compromise as far as issues of social and labour plan is concerned by the company. That the company is still very arrogant in opening right of association of members so that they can choose the union of their choice.”
Ponti says they believe the company simply ignores the country’s labour laws.
“There is a total compromise of all the legislations of this country. Workers were suspended and dismissed around march and April they only had to receive their forms to apply for UIF this week. Workers continue to be injured there and there are no benefits.
“There are still a number of issues there, the company still employ people from other provinces instead of the community there. The community is being bypassed by the company.”
