NUM: Sibanye-Stillwater 'doesn't care about safety'

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has accused Sibanye-Stillwater of not caring about the safety after yet another miner died at its operations.

The miner died at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Driefontein mine on Wednesday night.

The latest incident brings the number of fatalities at the mine to 21.

The NUM's Livhuwani Mammburu says Sibanye-Stillwater clearly does not care about health and safety standards.

"We feel that the Mining Safety Act must be amended. So that does who are found responsible for negligence for fatalities in the mining industry must be arrested, prosecuted and sent to jail," says  Mammburu.

Mammburu believes calling for the suspension of operations at the mine will only have a negative impact on workers.

Department of Mineral Resources echoed NUM’s sentiments.

The department's Ayanda Shezi says inspectors are already at the mine to investigate the latest fatality.

A report will be handed over to Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe after the conclusion of the probe.

Shezi could not provide the date the report will be handed over to the minister.

In a statement, the mine said the employee died when he entered a scraper path and was caught by the scraper.
