"Numsa outrightly condemns what looks like a well-calculated and dastardly killing of its three shop stewards... in Isithebe," KwaZulu-Natal regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane said in a statement.

Isithebe secretary Njabulo Ndebele, his deputy Sibonelo "John-John" Ntuli, and Ntobeko Maphumulo were killed on Wednesday night on the way back from a union meeting in Durban.

A fourth person who was with the three was wounded and is in hospital.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker told Sapa police were investigating three cases of murder but could not give further information on the incident or say if it was union-related.

"We can confirm an incident that occurred on 6 August... where three men aged between 31 and 36 were allegedly shot and killed at Mabhengwane Road, Chappies section. The motive of the killing is unknown at this stage," he said.

Naicker said no arrests had been made.

Ngubane called on members to remain calm and allow police to investigate the killings.

"We appeal to anyone that might have information around this barbaric deed to approach the police and provide necessary information," he said.

"We call on the law enforcement agencies to apprehend the culprits so that they can face the full might of the law."
