Numsa ‘dismayed’ by looming retrenchments at Mercedes-Benz

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa has added its voice to those lamenting the decision by Mercedes-Benz South Africa to retrench some 700 employees.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa announced on Thursday that it had decided to enter a consultation process regarding the restructuring of its manufacturing operations at its East London plant.
The company cited logistical challenges caused by Transnet’s backlog at the country’s seaports and increased energy costs as some of the reasons for its decision.
Numsa, the largest trade union at the company, says job categories likely to be affected include artisans, team managers, and hourly employees.
The company has about 3,400 employees in total.
Numsa’s General Secretary Irvin Jim said they will do everything possible to prevent job losses.
“Numsa is dismayed by the section 189 notice. We are deeply concerned about workers and their families who will be affected if the company goes through with the retrenchments.
"It is unlikely that workers will find alternative employment if the MBSA implements the proposed retrenchments.
"We will wait for the CCMA to issue dates for the first meeting so we can consult with the employer.”
