Numsa to picket at Autopax over late salaries

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) will hold a picket at Autopax on Friday over the company’s failure to pay workers’ salaries for the month of July.

The Union says it is not the first time that workers at Autopax have had their salaries delayed.

NUMSA National Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola blames the “incompetence of management” at Autopax for the delay in salary payments.

“Workers have raised very sharply over many years, their frustrations with Autopax management who have demonstrated consistent incompetence in the running of this entity. Our members who are bus drivers confirm that money is being collected from passengers every day, and the busses are full. But Autopax is still unable to pay salaries because the entity is being mismanaged,” says Hlubi-Majola.

She adds that Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, has already addressed workers and promised to intervene.

“The very same incompetent managers are still there, and payment of salaries remains a challenge.

We are also disturbed by the attitude of the GCEO of PRASA Zolani Matthews. He said he does not know when workers will be paid salaries, and he claims to be waiting for the intervention of the department of Transport. He is the GCEO of PRASA. PRASA owns Autopax, therefore, he must provide direction and he should be able to give answers. If he is unable to fulfill his mandate as GCEO, which seems to be the case, then perhaps he must step aside and allow space for someone else to provide direction.

Workers have also been angered by the fact that bus negotiations were concluded in April but they have not received their increase since then until now.”
