Numsa shop steward gunned down in Rustenburg
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says one of its shop stewards at Implats has been gunned down.
Mahlomola Hlothoane was shot and killed by two unknown suspects outside his home in Rustenburg on Friday night.
The trade union’s spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said Mahlomola was targeted for recruiting workers at the mine.
"This is the second Numsa official who has been murdered for organising workers at Implats. It is unacceptable that people are dying simply for exercising their constitutional right to join a union of their choice.
"We demand justice for these murders, and we demand that the police must ensure that the community of Rustenburg, particularly in the immediate surrounding area of Implats is safe for all who live there."
