Numsa veterans concerned over union’s ‘internal democracy’
Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
Veteran members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) on Sunday expressed concerns over what they perceive to be a lack of internal democracy at the union.
This comes after the Labour Court ruled the suspension of several Numsa officials ahead of its conference to have been invalid and unconstitutional.
The court said the union is interdicted from proceeding with its national conference on Monday, until it complied with its own constitution.
NUMSA veteran Phutas Tseki says they have met with the union’s general-secretary Irvin Jim to share their concerns.
“We requested to meet with Numsa before the Congress because of the observations we have made about the challenges of internal democracy. Workers should be able to raise issues without fear of being targeted by any leader or anyone.
“We are worried that new development is encroaching. You cannot suspend 29 officials, clearly there’s something wrong.”
