Numsa wins court bid to march in Durban

This came after the eThekwini municipality withdrew Numsa's permit to march in Durban.

Numsa regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane said the march would go ahead as planned.

"Numsa strongly condemns ill-conceived decision to withdraw our permit," he said.

"This clearly demonstrates that the municipality was being used for political expediency by certain powerful individuals either in Cosatu or elsewhere."

The march will start at King Dinizulu Park on 09:00 and will be led by expelled Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, SA Public Service Union president Thobile Ntola, who was expelled from the SA Democratic Teachers Union, Food and Allied Workers Union general secretary Katishi Masemola and Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim.

Numsa is expected to be joined by some Cosatu affiliates who are supporting the metalworkers' union and Vavi, following their expulsion from the trade union federation.

Cosatu has warned its affiliates against attending any events where Vavi is speaking.

The unions joining the march are the South African Catering Commercial and Allied Workers Union; Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa; Public and Allied Workers Union of South Africa; South African State and Allied Workers Union; Fawu; Communications Workers Union and South African Football Players Union.

May Day marches will also be held in Johannesburg, East London, Bloemfontein and George.
