Vishnu Naidoo, the spokesperson for National Police Commissioner Kehla Sitole, says the suspects are aged between 18 and 60 years.

"The police will do everything to ensure that those arrested, will face the full brunt of the law.

"The commissioner is also warning other wrongdoers of the dire consequences of their criminal actions."

Naidoo says some of the suspects have already appeared in court.

"The charges that suspects are likely to face are charges of malicious damage to property, assault and arson."

A cultural centre, a police station and a bus were set alight by protesters, who are calling for the head of Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

Mahumapelo is facing several allegations of corruption. Questions are also being asked about his relationship with the controversial Gupta family.

Protestors also looted shops belonging to foreign nationals, forcing them to seek shelter elsewhere.

Cabinet has meanwhile also set up a task team in an attempt to quell the violence.

The team will be headed by Minister in the Presidency Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and also includes Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Ngqakula, the Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi and the Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene.
