NW officer fired for impregnating prisoner
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
A North West police officer was fired on Tuesday after he allegedly impregnated an inmate awaiting trial for murder.
The officer and inmate were allegedly involved in sexual relations last year October when the woman was brought in to the Stilfontein holding cells from the Rooigrond Correctional Centre ahead of her court appearance.
According to provincial police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh, the woman has since been sentenced to 30 years behind bars for murder.
“In March 2021 she discovered that she was pregnant and correctional services reported the incident to SAPS.
“No criminal case had been lodged against the officer,” Myburgh adds.
