North West Social Development MEC and ANC provincial treasurer Kgakgamatso Nkewu died in a car accident in Vryburg on Thursday, the North West provincial government said.

Nkewu and her two police bodyguards were travelling from Mahikeng to Taung along the N18 when their vehicle hit a cyclist, who also died at the scene.
"This accident represents a tragic loss to the family, the North West Provincial Government and to the entire country. The Provincial Government has lost an extremely hard working public representative who lost her life while on duty," North West premier Supra Mahumapelo said.
Nkewu was ejected from the vehicle after it hit the cyclist and overturned.
The two VIP protectors, who survived the accident, were admitted to a hospital where both are reported to be in critical condition.
The vehicle allegedly caught fire after the accident.
