Police Minister Bheki Cele says
the Nyanga police station in Cape Town ranks number one for contact crimes in
the country.
Cele was speaking during a media briefing in Cape Town on Thursday morning.
He gave a report on police progress in combating crime in the Western Cape during the period 1 April to 11 September 2022.
Cele said the Western Cape has the third highest number of gun-related murders in the country.
“Firearms are three times likely the weapon of choice in all reported murders in the country. So, it is on this score that the removal of 33 firearms and 538 rounds of ammunition in a week from the streets of the Cape Flats by the police is welcomed.”
Cele said 21 life sentences have been handed down to convicted murderers and rapists during this period.
“A total of 118 people were convicted on serious crimes, such as 27 people convicted of murder, 84 rape, two attempted rape, two for robbery with aggravating circumstances and the remainder were convicted on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and assault GBH.
“These individuals are collectively serving 1 401 years imprisonment.”
