Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande is expected to meet with transport unions and bus industry bosses later on Thursday - to try and bring an end to the bus strike.

The last round of wage talks, facilitated by Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, failed to reach a settlement on Tuesday.

Bus drivers have softened their demands, requesting an increase of 9% in the first year and 8.5% in the second year.

Employers offered a 9% increase for the first year and 8% increase in the second year, which would be paid from 1 May 2018 instead of 1 April 2018.

The spokesperson for the South Africa Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) Zanele Sabela explains the main issue now is that unions want their first year nine percent increase to reflect on their pay cheques from the first of April already, not May.

"It will mean that workers will walk away with only 11 months' of an increased salary," explains Sabela.

"We don't want that and that is one of the reasons why we are still at a stalemate."
