A 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing a car wheel and tyre in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.
The man was arrested on Thursday morning along High Street by an off-duty police constable, said Captain Jackson Manatha.
When questioned by the officer, the man said he was going to patch the tyre.
"When the suspect realised that he was caught out and was going to be arrested, he started to run, but he could not outrun the constable," Manatha said.
The officer caught and arrested the man.
He would appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Friday.
