A police officer is in a critical condition after a shoot-out took place in the Johannesburg CBD during a stop-and-search operation on Wednesday morning.

Gauteng police officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation on Plein Street when a shootout occurred between police and a lone suspect.
The suspect was killed, while two officers and a bystander were injured in the incident.
ER24 paramedics say the shooter was declared dead on the scene.
Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says they are investigating a case of murder and an inquest docket.
According to Masondo it is still unclear whether the shooter was involved in any illegal activities when the incident took place.
"We are still investigating because it was an operation of stop-and-search. So we stop all people that look suspicious in the CBD. Our members approached this one, he then put out a firearm then there was a shootout. We cannot confirm nor deny that he was up to something."
