Officials re-open Durban beaches
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The eThekwini Municipality says four of Durban's beaches that were closed due to pharmaceutical waste found on the coastline have been re-opened.
The municipality closed the Umgeni/Mangrove, Beachwood, Virginia and Glenashley beaches on Wednesday after medical waste washed on the shoreline.
While the City said earlier this week that the beaches would remain closed for at least two weeks to allow for clean-up operations, officials say they've been able to find the source of the waste.
Investigations also revealed that only a fraction of the waste is pharmaceutical in nature.
The municipality says the majority of the debris consists of general waste and driftwood.
It's added it's highly likely that all this waste originated from various sources along the catchment that washed into the sea from the Umngeni River following the recent heavy rains in Durban.
Meanwhile eThekwini's advising bathers heading to these beaches to exercise caution as there is still a lot of debris washing ashore.
