Onderstepoort dumping site to close down
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The Onderstepoort landfill in Rosslyn will officially close at the end of the month.

Tshwane’s agriculture and environmental management department says the site, which has been open since 1992, has reached the end of its lifespan.
"Members of the public are advised to utilise the Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve and Hatherley landfill sites as well as nearby private landfill sites which amongst others includes Bon Accord, Rosslyn and Mooiplaats as an alternative,” says the department’s Richard Moheta.
He says the amount of waste is increasing due to the growth in both township and suburban population.
"Landfills are usually designed with a specific life span, determined by the volume of waste that can be handled. Once filled to capacity, they must be closed and decommissioned as stipulated in the waste management legislation."
Only garden refuse will be accepted for the remainder of the year as part of the rehabilitation of the site.
