One killed in blaze at informal settlement
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
One person died and hundreds of others have been left without shelter after a fire tore through the Denver informal settlement in Johannesburg on Saturday night.
Spokesperson for the city's emergency services, Nana Radebe, says the blaze was apparently caused by a candle that was left unattended.
"Just before midnight we received a call about shacks on fire at Denver squatter camp. When we arrived there were flames everywhere. Plus a hundred shacks were affected and one person died."
Radebe says emergency services were still on scene on Sunday morning in order to assist the affected families.
"Disaster management is on scene registering names of the affected people so we could be able to assist them. Already we have more than 100 people, this is more than 80 families that are affected and we have to assist."
Radebe says the exact cause of the fire will be investigated.
