One person was killed that ripped through an informal settlement in Durban in the early hours of Monday morning.
Robert Mckenzie, spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Emergency Medical Service (EMS) said that about six or seven dwellings were destroyed in the blaze in the informal settlement on Mhlongo Road in Durban’s Lamontville area.
He said that the eThekwini Metro Fire Brigade doused the blaze and it was not immediately known what had caused the fire, but that strong winds had fanned the blaze.
He said the man who died was believed to be in his seventies, while a woman was also treated and taken to hospital. Further details were not immediately available.
McKenzie urged people to be very careful when lighting fires and stoves, especially taking into account the strong winds.
