Updated | By Maidi Monareng
Violent protests in Pienaar in Mpumalanga have lead to the death of at least one person.
According to the police, the man was shot and killed when police opened fire after protesters pelted officers with stones.
Residents are reportedly unhappy with candidates for the upcoming local government elections and blocked roads leading into town.
Protests have also spilled over into Kanyamazane.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Gerald Sedibe said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was probing the incident.
"There was tension between police [and protesters] when they [protesters] began to throw stones," Sedibe said.
IPID said it could not comment as it was still gathering information.
