One of them tried to escape the blaze and jumped from one of the floors.

Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe says they received a call about the fire on the corners of Jeppe and Nugget Streets around 9.00am this morning.

"When we got to the scene, the second floor was well alight. One person had jumped and unfortunately died," says Radebe.

Radebe says six other people also died inside the building.

"Seven people have been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and other burns," says Radebe.

Radebe says they have already rescued more than 40 people from the fifth floor.
