Opposition slam Ramaphosa speech as 'far removed from reality'

Ramaphosa highlighted the government’s achievements and priorities during his address on Thursday evening, including the efforts to end load shedding, corruption and crime.

DA leader John Steenhuisen said Ramaphosa's speech was far removed from the lived reality of many South Africans.

"This is the same president who told us in 2018 that, in 12 to 18 months, load shedding will be a thing of the past, but we are now in 2024 and load shedding its worse than it has been in the last 10 years.

"His promises are not credible or believable," said Steenhuisen.

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa echoed Steenhuisen's sentiments, adding that Ramaphosa couldn't even be honest about the contents of the report into state capture.

"When you look on the issue of state capture, we all know state capture is a shame by the ANC. It has not taken consequence on leaders who are implicated.

"When he said we are taking action on state capture, the house laughed at him. He also laughed because he knows he is not telling the truth," said Hlabisa.

ATM Leader Vuyo Zungula said it is impossible for Ramaphosa to take accountability when he cannot even be honest with himself.

"There is no hope because, there would be improvements if he, as a leader of the country, acknowledges that he has failed.

"What he has done was to pull a wool over people's eyes. He was delivering his 8th SONA, but he want to talk about how the country was in 1994.

"..If he was going to look at all the indicators from 2018 and now, all of them paint a grim picture of what the lived realities of the people are," added Zungula.
