A special
orchid will be unveiled next week as part of the celebrations of the life of
late struggle stalwart Albertina Sisulu.
The inter-ministerial task team unveiled an array of activities in honour of Sisulu and former president Nelson Mandela in Pretoria on Friday.
Both struggle stalwarts would have turned 100 years old this year.
“The orchid will be unveiled on 10 July 2018 by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort,” Minister Jeff Radebe told reporters.
The government also says there will be a special focus on Sisulu’s life in August, as it is women's month.
“Government has dedicated this year’s women’s month to deepen centenary celebrations of Mama Sisulu as a selfless and courageous leader who will be celebrated for her contribution to the cause of democracy and the fight for women’s empowerment and gender equality,” Radebe said.
The Nelson Mandela celebrations will include the annual Nelson Mandela Lecture, which will be delivered by former US President Barack Obama later this month.
The lecture will be delivered at the Wanderers in Illovo.
