Over 100k suspects nabbed since May – Masemola
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has hailed the impact of Operation Shanela, saying it has led to the arrest of 109 000 suspects countrywide since May.
The high-density anti-crime initiative was officially launched in Durban in August.
Masemola says police have focused on regular roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, searches at problematic hostels, unlicensed liquor premises, scrapyards, and informal businesses such as spaza shops.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Masemola said between 14 and 20 August, 9 656 suspects were arrested for various crimes.
"We are registering commendable progress in the fight against crime. The number of those arrested during this period gives us hope that this is a step in the right direction. Working closely with all stakeholders in the fight against crime, including our communities, we can achieve more success. We will continue with heightened visibility operations so as to continue to rid our communities of all forms of criminality.”
