Over 2000 motorists nabbed since the start of the festive season travel period

A total of 2 241 motorists have been arrested for drunken driving, high speed, driving without licenses and violation of permits since the start of December.

The latest data, released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on Tuesday morning, shows over a 100 000 fines have also been issued on roads across the country.


"Law enforcement agencies have remained on high alert and have conducted more than 188 roadblocks in which 611 148 vehicles were stopped and checked. More than 100 960 traffic fines issued," says RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.


"Evidence shows that some motorists continue to operate unroadworthy vehicles on public roads placing the lives of other motorists at risk. More than 4 200 vehicles have since been discontinued from operating.


"A total of 324 motorists were arrested for drunken driving. The highest alcohol arrest was in Gauteng, between Lever and New Road in Midrand. The suspect’s alcohol reading was recorded at 3.99mg/1000ml".


Meanwhile, the highest speeding arrest was on December 8th on the N1 route to Bloemfontein in the Free-State, where a motorist was caught driving at 191km/hour in a 120km zone.


The motorists was released on bail of R3 500.
