Over 400 Gauteng spaza shops shut down
Updated | By Lebohang Ndashe
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni confirmed on Friday that 413 spaza shops have been closed since January for failing to comply with safety and health regulations.
On Friday, Mthombeni briefed the media on Gauteng crime stats for second quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.
The issue of spaza shops has been in the headlines following the deaths of several children in the province from foodborne illnesses believed to be linked to contaminated food sold at local spaza shops.
“We have dealt with 693 non-compliant spaza shops and arrested 224 illegal immigrants,” Mthombeni told the committee.
At the same time, Gauteng witnessed a 7.6% decline in contact crimes in the second quarter.
Mthombeni said despite the overall reduction in contact crimes between July and September, sexual offences, including rape and sexual assault, increased by 3.6% and 3.4%, respectively.
