Over 50 arrested for lockdown violations in Phalaborwa

Police have arrested 53 people for violating lockdown regulations in Phalaborwa in Limpopo.

The arrests were made during several police operations that targeted roads, taxi ranks and malls.
Various police roadblocks were also conducted.
A total of 42 people were arrested for failing to stay at home, while 2 people were arrested for operating non-essential businesses which were subsequently closed by authorities.
In a statement, Limpopo police say 5 people were nabbed for selling sorghum beer.

Alcohol is not allowed to be sold during the strict disaster regulations currently in place.
Two people were also arrested for overloading taxis.
According to the regulations, taxis are only allowed to transport 70 % of their fully loaded capacity – a total of only 10 people in a 15-seater vehicle.
