Over a hundred kilos of elephant tusks confiscated

Two suspects have been arrested in the North West, after they were found in possession of suspected stolen elephant tusks.

The suspects were in possession of ivory weighing 112,70 kilograms with a total value of R 676 000-00. 


Douglas Matambandini (46) and Mmoloki Moseki (49) were arrested while they were on their way to Klerksdorp on Wednesday.


"Information was received that the suspects were on their way to Klerksdorp and members of Organised Crime and the Tactical Response Team in Klerksdorp, stop and searched a Toyota bakkie, leading to the arrest of the two suspects in Klerksdorp.

 

"Six elephant tusks, which were hidden underneath maize bags, were seized", says police spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma. 


The pair appeared at the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on Friday.


They will be back in court on 16 November 2018 for a formal bail application.
