Palmiet System pumping at full capacity following ‘power failure’

Rand Water’s Palmiet System was back to full capacity on Wednesday night amid a spat between Johannesburg Water and Eskom over the cause of the breakdown.

Reservoirs in Sandton and Midrand have shown improvement, but the South Hills Tower, which serves South Hills and Linmeyer, still needs more supply from the bulk supplier.
On Wednesday, Eskom refuted Johannesburg Water’s claim that a power interruption at the Palmiet substation prevented it from pumping water at full capacity.
However, Eskom said no power failure was detected on their network that would impact the Palmiet station.
Eskom Gauteng’s spokesperson Amanda Qithi said following a thorough internal investigation, Eskom’s technical teams have confirmed that all power infrastructure serving the area is operational.
Qithi said Rand Water adjusted its operating model due to issues in its engine rooms, informing Eskom that, until the breaker is replaced, they would only be able to pump about 80% of the required load.
“Eskom is working jointly with Rand Water to find a speedy resolution to address the challenges they are experiencing,” she said, adding that Eskom is unhappy that the utility chose to issue a public statement detailing incorrect information.
“Such actions can cause unnecessary confusion and concern among the public,” Qithi said.
