Parents not accepting placement offers ‘creating chaos’, warns Lesufi
Updated | By Nokukhanya Mntambo
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has expressed anger at parents who have failed to accept or reject school placement offers before the deadline.
Lesufi says the lack of response from these parents has created a backlog in the system.
On Sunday, the MEC was confronted by frustrated parents, whose children had not been placed at a school, at the department’s district office in Sandton.
Lesufi blamed this crisis on parents who were sitting with offers from the department.
“We’ve got 70 000 parents to place, there are 27 000 that were given offers and they are not accepting it and they are creating chaos,” says Lesufi.
He warned that the department would withdraw these offers.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi met with the parents to provide clarity on the department's plans to ensure that all pupils are placed for the 2020 academic year. The department's deadline for the process to be complete was at the end of last month, but a large number of offers had not been accepted or declined.
“If you don’t want to take placement there is a parent who needs that placement so we can deal with those particular processes, because if you don’t accept then some parents will accept. Some parents are here and they’re waiting for those spaces and you don’t want to accept it, we’ll give it to everyone.”
The department has extended the placement period to the end of the month.
