FPB: Parents need to be aware of children's online activities
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The Film and Publication Board (FPB) has urged parents to closely monitor their children’s online activities.
The widely debunked Momo suicide challenge has once again sent parents into a frenzy. ]
The challenge apparently targets young children, encourages self-harm and could even lead to suicide.
According to the board's spokesperson Lynette Kamineth, parents need to be aware of their children’s social media activities and not to use it as a “babysitter”.
“There are so many dangers, such as cyberbullying and children being lured into child pornography using social media and technology.”
Kamineth says there are apps available to monitor a child’s online activities, screen time or send alerts when an app is being downloaded.
“We urge parents to ensure that they adhere to age restrictions as assigned by the FPB. Age-appropriate content goes a long way towards protecting your young ones from premature exposure to content that causes them psychological and developmental harm.”
