Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police says the police needs to urgently address the spike in cash-in-transit robberies.

It follows the latest incidents in Limpopo at the weekend.

On Friday, two security guards were injured when armed suspects blew up their cash van in the Hoedspruit area.

There have been no arrests.

This was followed by another incident on Sunday, during which one suspect was killed.

"...The cash-in-transit security officers were on their way to fix ATMs in and around the Jane Furse area when they were overtaken by a silver Toyota Corolla with three occupants inside," the police said.

The suspects then opened fire on the van, and when the security guards retaliated, they killed one and wounded two others.

The suspects fled empty handed.

"The committee is of the view that crime intelligence and detection operations should be increased and the relevant specialised units should be tasked to deal with the current crime trend," said the portfolio committee's chairperson Francois Beukman.

Beukman said while police management had in the past assured action, there has been no reduction in attacks.

A range of cash-in-transit robberies recently surfaced on social media, with suspects targeting cash vans in broad daylight.
