Parliament employee shoots himself in office
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Police have confirmed that a Parliamentary worker was shot and killed in his office on Friday afternoon.
Police believe the man killed himself.
“At this stage we don't have any evidence that suggest that there was any foul play,” says spokesperson, Vishu Naidoo.
Although the incident did not take place in Parliament, concerns have been raised over the possible security breach.
“It didn't happen in Parliament but in an adjacent building on 90 Plein Street,” explained Naidoo.
Paramedics were called to the scene.
Parliament's presiding officers have since conveyed their condolences to his relatives.
“The incident has, obviously, caused trauma and distress among Parliament's members of staff and the institution as a whole,” says spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo.
Mothapo says assistance will be given to colleagues who witnessed the incident.
