Parliament fire accused Zandile Mafe starts 30-day mental observation
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The man accused of starting the massive fire at Parliament, Zandile Mafe, has begun his 30-day mental observation at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.
He began his stint in hospital on Thursday.
During his previous his court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, an order was made that he be admitted.
The NPA confirmed the details pertaining to his hospital stay were communicated to his legal team through email.
Mafe’s hospital admission comes after the National Prosecuting Authority argued in court that he be referred to a psychiatric facility for observation.
“This follows a diagnosis and recommendation by district surgeon Dr Zelda van Tonder that Mafe suffered from paranoid schizophrenia,” said NPA regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.
Mafe had threatened to go on a hunger strike if he is not granted bail.
