Penny Sparrow: Community service more purposeful, says expert
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
A legal expert believes a community service sentence would have been more beneficial in the Penny Sparrow case.
The former south coast estate agent was fined R5000 or 12-months in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of crimen injuria in the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Sunil Singh of Sunil Singh and Associates in Durban says working with previously disadvantaged communities would have taught Sparrow a lesson.
She created controversy on social media in January when she described black beachgoers as monkeys.

The court also ordered that Sparrow make a public apology using Facebook - the same platform as the original post.
Singh feels the magistrate should have taken Sparrow's conviction of hate speech in consideration when handing down his own sentence.
