Phalatse 'resolute' on returning as Joburg mayor

Former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse says she is determined to return to the mayoral office.

Phalatse was booted out in a motion of no confidence that was brought by the opposition parties last Friday.

She had only served in the position for ten months.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM News on Tuesday, Phalatse said the DA would be making its way back to council as she has personally made the promise to the residents of Joburg.

“There are talks that are ongoing and it is still early days to comment on the way forward, but we are resolute that we want to come back. Our residents deserve that I personally made a commitment to our residents that I will never abandon them.

“Therefore, we cannot allow what has happened to continue. It would be a breach of promise especially on my part and the part of the coalition. We have made a commitment to the residents that we are going to make this work and to rebuild the city. We need to find each other and make sure that happens.”

While proceedings were underway in council to vote in a new mayor, the DA filed an urgent application with the Johannesburg High Court in an attempt to interdict the process.

But the court threw out the application on the basis of urgency.

Phalatse says the DA has filed new court application.

“The case is still on, and I hear a lot of reports saying it was struck off the roll. It wasn’t struck off the roll it’s still on. Yesterday we were filing papers to go to court. We must go to court.

"There's no way we can allow what has happened to continue because what has happened is illegal. Our residents deserve a legitimate mayor and administration."
