PHOTO: Three die in head-on collision
Three men were killed and nine others left injured this morning following a head-on collision on the R28 near Vereeniging.
According to ER24 paramedics, they responded to the accident earlier on Thursday and found a truck and taxi had collided.
"The taxi smashed against the front of the truck and metro services closed off the road while paramedics and fire services assessed the scene," ER24 said in a statement.
Three men were declared dead upon arrival with two bodies still trapped in the taxi.
"Nine other patients were found on scene with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Some of these patients also lay trapped inside the wrecked taxi," the statement read.
Rescue workers had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the patients from the wreckage and two critically injured patients had to be airlifted to hospital.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
