PHOTOS: City Power acts against illegal connections in Lenasia

City Power embarked on an operation to cut illegal power connections in an informal settlement in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
Residents across Lenasia Drive have connected electricity illegally, from the nearby railway line into the settlement, leaving exposed wire that pose a danger to residents and children playing in the nearby park.
City Power’s spokesperson Isaac Mangena told Jacaranda FM News earlier that the city loses close to R2 billion annually due to non-technical issues, which includes illegal power connections.

He added that illegal power connections are not only a problem in the informal areas but in the suburbs as well.

Mangena says Tuesday’s operation in Lenasia was successful as City Power managed to free up space on the electricity network.
“We did manage to cut kilometres and kilometres of exposed wires. Obviously, we did not go into the shacks themselves, but at least it will be a disturbance to them until we go into the second leg of the operation.”
