MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his exasperation over the weekly incidents of crime and vandalism at the province’s schools.
This comes after a group of armed robbers hit Esithebeni Primary School in Soweto, stealing equipment worth more than R3 million on Friday night.
Lesufi says because the school was heavily secured, the robbers used high calibre weapons to break the walls and breaking into the storerooms.
"They stole devices that are normally utilised by learners in schools such as laptops, tablets, computers and smartboards," says Lesufi.
He says they are working closely with police and the community to track down the suspects.
In August, Lesufi revealed that vandalism and theft cost the department more than R120 million since the start of the year.
