Pietermaritzburg policeman shot dead
Updated | By Staff Writer
A Pietermaritzburg police officer has been shot dead as he returned home from work, police said on Tuesday.
Colonel Jay Naicker said the body of Constable Bongani Lembethe, 29, was found outside his home in Prestbury, Pietermaritzburg, on Monday night.
Naicker said the motive for the killing was not known, but that robbery could be excluded.
"The victim was still in possession of his service pistol and his wallet after the attack."
Lembethe's girlfriend and the mother of his two daughters heard the shots and discovered his body.
Several shots were fired in the attack.
