Pikitup MD Amanda Nair dismissed

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he has given the go-ahead for Pikitup's Managing Director, Amanda Nair, to be fired.

He has confirmed the decision by the entity's board following various protests and strikes by municipal workers union, Samwu, against Nair.

The action led to refuse and waste left uncollected along the streets for weeks on end.

Mashaba said the issue dragged on for just too long.

"It unfortunately has been holding delivery of services from our people, because the board was unable to put in the right type of structures so that we can put in people who can run our administration," Mashaba said.

Meanwhile, Samwu has welcomed Nair's dismissal and has called for a new Managing Director to be appointed as soon as possible.

"We hope that justice has been served since our allegations relating to her corrupt activities have been proven to be correct," Samwu's Simon Mathe said.

Earlier, the SACP in the Linda Jabane District - joined by Cosatu, SANCO and BDS South Africa - delivered a memorandum to the City of Johannesburg.

It was received by Mayor Mashaba.

The organizations say a series of deeply worrying and disturbing set of political developments, trends and observations have been observed in the short period since the DA took over.

BDS South Africa's Kwara Kekana read out the memorandum.

Among the demands - a halt to plans to privatise Pikitup.

"We demand a socio-economic Indaba mapping the process of social control of all MOE's and municipal assets. Further abandon and abort the reactionary plan of handing Pikitup to monopoly capital through privatisation," Kekana said.

The organizations told Mashaba he is leading the city by default.

Mashaba and his administration has been labelled as desperate and pathetic agents of imperialism.

"As black as you might look, that does not make you progressive and rather reminds us of the old Bantustan leaders," Kekana said.
