‘Pipeline’ of young professionals to solve skills shortage - De Ruyter
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Eskom CEO André de Ruyter says the power utility Eskom aims to solve its skills crisis with a “pipeline” of skilled young professionals.

De Ruyter spoke at the ‘On the Record Summit’ hosted by News24 in Sandton on Thursday.
“And I think what we have done in the past is that we have allowed skills to leave the company without having a formal process to ensure that those skills are in fact transferred,” De Ruyter said.
“And that is what we are focusing on now, to build a pipeline of young people with the appropriate skills.”
Eskom, which has been battling to keep the lights on for more than a decade, has suffered a mass exodus of employees with critical skills.

The power utility has also been descimated by state capture, and De Ruyter warns that corruption at the entity is still rife.
“And then I think lastly that there is a residue of corruption. I think the notion that somehow corruption ended when the Guptas plane departed Lanseria airport is not true. Corruption is still a part of the organisation, and that manifests itself in quite interesting ways.”
