Pit toilets unlawful since 2016: Section27
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Non-profit and social justice organisation Section27 says it is concerned about the number of pupils in Limpopo who are still forced to make use of pit toilets.
According to the province’s Department of Education, some 66 000 pupils still make use of pit latrines.
Section27’s Demichelle Petherbridge says pit toilets were outlawed in 2016.
“It is a travesty that just under 66 000 learners in Limpopo are still use pit latrines. We know this is roughly about 210 schools in the province that have pit latrines as their only form of sanitation.
“Pit toilets have been unlawful since 2016 according to the Basic Education Department’s own regulations relating to uniform minimum norms and standards on public school infrastructure. So they have missed their deadline to eradicate this by a number of years.”
Petherbridge says authorities in Limpopo have vowed to eradicate pit toilets by the end of the month.
“Limpopo however, have undertook to remove all pit latrines by 31 March and so we will be following up with them to see if they have met this deadline. Nationally, the government needs a deliberate plan to address this problem and it should budget for this plane and make the public aware of it’s decisions so it can be held accountable”.
