Platinum talks resume
Talks between platinum mines and Amcu were set to continue at the CCMA on Friday, Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) said.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) has been brokering talks between the union and the companies since January 24 over a strike now in its fifth week.
The platinum sector has been severely battered by the strike of mineworkers affiliated to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).
The union's members at Lonmin, Anglo American Platinum, and Implats downed tools demanding a R12,500 basic salary.
On Thursday, Implats CEO Terence Goodlace said it could not afford the R12,500, and if the strike continued he feared for the industry as the consequences would be dire.
Implats had offered to increase the minimum monthly guaranteed pay package so that surface employees' package would grow from R8641 now to R10,915 in three years. Underground workers' packages would increase from R9297 to R11,746 over the same period.
But no agreement has yet been reached.
