This follows the death of four people in separate incidents at the Nomzamo Park in Orlando.

While investigating these deaths, police noted that these incidents happened at shebeens or taverns and that the victims were intoxicated.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Mathaphelo Peters, says they have not yet arrested anyone and witnesses cannot recall anything as they were also intoxicated.

Peters says people will be arrested for drunk driving, and also for drinking in public and drunkenness.

Peters says they have increased police visibility all around the city and they have identified hotspots.

"We are bringing this to the attention of the public to caution them that while they set out to enjoy the festive season, they must do so responsibly, otherwise they will be arrested and earn themselves unnecessary criminal records, compromising amongst other things, their future career prospects," Peters say.

"The irresponsible consumption of liquor has proven over and over again that it is a serious generator of crime. While many believe it is a source of pleasure during the festive season, it can also earn one a criminal record or lead to serious crime such as murder, domestic violence and sexual offences," she adds.

Peters says even at places where it is permitted to drink they will be monitoring how residents gets home.
