The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's Hawks Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha said the heist took place in Kraaifontein at around 8.00pm.
"Investigations into the circumstances of the robbery led to the arrest of a 33-year-old police constable at his residence in Khayelitsha."
Ramovha said a bag containing money was recovered.
"He is stationed at the Nyanga police station and used an official vehicle in the execution of the crime."
Five suspects are still at large and are being sought.
"The group is alleged to have pulled over a cash-in-transit at Wabrug Road and robbed the guards at gunpoint of an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene," said Ramovha.
The 33-year-old police constable will appear in Kuilsriver Magistrates court on Friday. - ANA
